Several years ago, it was decided at a club board meeting that our IPMS Ocala club needed a logo. We wanted something that identified us to the area, and still represented the light heartedness of our club. Ocala Florida is horse country, and there is not much frivolity about horses.
Another "major" attraction to the area is Silver Springs, with it's glass bottomed boats. Rhesus monkeys were brought in to enhance the "Jungle Cruise" in the 1930s.
Here is just a little information about these creatures. Hardy in captivity, highly intelligent, and lively, they make good pets when young but may become bad-tempered as adults. The
U.S. Army, the
U.S. Air Force, and
NASA launched Rhesus Macaques into outer space during the 1950s and 60s, and the Soviet/Russian space program launched them into space as recently as 1997 on the
Bion missions. One of these primates ("Able") who was launched
on a suborbital spaceflight in the early 1950s was one of the two first living beings (along with "Miss Baker" on the same mission) to travel in space and return alive. Left to their own means, they quickly multiplied and, to this day, are an attraction on their own.
So, with just a little stretch of imagination, one can make the leap in logic to our use of these interesting and cute creatures on our club logo. Our club logo represents our area's heritage as well as our fun loving approach to the hobby. We tell people that we like to monkey around with plastic. Sometimes we are affectionately referred to as the "Monkey Men of Ocala", but there is no connection with us and the land of Oz.
